We conducted a systematic study on data available through Symantec’s Worldwide Intelligence Network Environment to help us to understand the duration and prevalence of zero-day attacks. Based on what we learned, we developed a methodology that automatically identifies zero-day attacks that have affected a large number of real hosts worldwide. Our methodology was not only able to detect already known zero-day attacks but also some that were previously unknown. Moreover, we discovered that the majority of zero-day attacks were able to stay undercover for a surprisingly long time.
