We have in our community certain long-running esthetic and philosophical disagreements to which we sometimes refer as “religious battles.” The ancient vi vs Emacs battle probably exemplifies this practice, there being both a “Cult of vi” as well as a “Church of Emacs” (and even an alt.religion.emacs mailing list).
