USENIX Conference Submissions Policy

As approved by the USENIX Board of Directors on April 16, 2021

USENIX welcomes submissions to our events. Please see the Calls for Papers and Calls for Participation page for the events that interest you.

Copyright

One of USENIX's major missions is to provide for the creation and dissemination of new knowledge under our open access policy. Unlike most publishers, USENIX permits authors to retain their ownership of the copyrights in their works.

Papers and presentations should avoid including the copyrighted works of others without permission, including video clips, music, and other original protected material.

Simultaneous Submissions of Papers

Simultaneous submission of the same paper to multiple venues, submission of previously published work, or plagiarism constitutes dishonesty or fraud. USENIX, like other scientific and technical conferences and journals, prohibits these practices and may, in consultation with the program chairs, take action against authors who have committed them. Program chairs may share information about submitted papers with other conference chairs and journal editors to ensure the integrity of papers under consideration.

If a violation of these principles is found, sanctions may include, but are not limited to, barring the authors from submitting to or participating in USENIX conferences for a set period, contacting the authors' institutions, sharing the details with other conference chairs and journal editors, and publicizing the details of the case.

Nondisclosure Agreements

Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. Accepted submissions will be treated as confidential prior to publication on the USENIX website; rejected submissions will be permanently treated as confidential.

Content Considerations

Authors and presenters are responsible for the content of their work, but USENIX requests that they be cognizant of potentially offensive actions, language, or imagery, and that they consider whether it is necessary to convey their message. If presenters decide to include content that is potentially offensive at an event, USENIX asks that they warn the audience, at the beginning of the talk as well as immediately before the content, and provide the audience with the opportunity to leave the talk to avoid seeing or hearing the material.

Language Considerations

Authors and presenters should avoid words where one meaning, even if it is not the one they intend, may be used to refer to another person or group of people in a derogatory manner. See the Code of Conduct for specific examples and recommendations regarding the use of language in all media.

Consent to Publish

Prior to publication of final papers or audio/video presentations, authors and presenters will be required to submit a signed consent form giving USENIX the right to publish their work. A sample form is available for reference.

Questions

Authors and presenters who are uncertain whether their submission meets USENIX's guidelines should contact the program chairs (see the relevant Call for Papers or Call for Participation for contact information) or the USENIX office (submissionspolicy@usenix.org).
