FREENIX TRACK CALL FOR PAPERS—HOW TO SUBMIT
The FREENIX track submission deadline is December 16, 2003. Papers
submitted after that date will be accepted at the discretion of the program
chairs.
The initial submission to the FREENIX track should consist of either an
extended abstract with bibliography totaling 3-5 pages, or a full paper of 8-12 pages. Submissions in either format must meet the USENIX formatting
guidelines. Extended abstracts and papers not meeting the page limits and
formatting requirements will not be read. (This is a change from previous
years.) A number of predefined templates are available to format abstracts
and papers according to the USENIX guidelines: LaTeX,
StarOffice/OpenOffice, Troff, Framemaker, and
MS-Word.
The FREENIX Program Committee reads the submissions to determine which
will be accepted for the conference. Submissions must include enough detail
so that program committee members can fully understand the work.
Particularly important is the current status of ongoing work, as well as
planned completion dates of any work necessary for the final paper. If the
work is related to specific software, then information about the license
under which that software is published and the location from which it may be
downloaded is required. Failure to specify an OSI approved license for any relevant software or failure to make the software available to the program committee during evaluation will discourage the program committee
from considering the submission. The FREENIX Paper Guidelines, available soon on this Web site, will give additional suggestions.
All submissions for the USENIX 2004 FREENIX Track will be electronic, in PostScript or PDF format, via this Web form. Information is available on producing PDF documents. Be sure your paper is formatted in US-letter style (8.5x11
inches) and that all fonts are embedded in the PDF document. Authors will be notified
of receipt of submission via email. If you do not receive notification by
December 19, 2004, please contact freenix04chairs@usenix.org.
Authors will be notified of submission acceptance or rejection by February
4, 2004. Authors whose extended abstracts are accepted are required to
produce a full paper for the proceedings.
FREENIX is unusual in that it is a "shepherded" track. The authors of
accepted extended abstracts will be assigned a program committee member who
will act as shepherd. The shepherd will advise and consult with the authors
on the writing process as they prepare a full paper of 8-12 pages. (The
shepherd may request the allocation of 2-4 additional pages in the
proceedings in response to a perceived need: these requests will be granted
at the discretion of the program chairs in consultation with the shepherd.)
Typically, authors and shepherds exchange 3-4 drafts of an accepted paper
during the shepherding period. The work involved in producing a camera-ready
paper should not be underestimated: it is always a time-consuming process.
The final reports must be reviewed and accepted by the paper's shepherd by
March 25, 2004. After shepherd approval, the final paper must be submitted
with the standard release forms to the USENIX Production Department by April
8, 2004.
The FREENIX Program Committee will also accept submissions of full papers.
Full papers will not be shepherded and will be judged on their suitability
for final publication. The authors of accepted full papers may edit for
style and formatting. The final paper must be submitted with the standard
release forms to the USENIX publications office by April 8, 2004.
Final papers should describe work that has been completed as of the time of
final submission. Final papers must be formatted in 2 columns, using 10 point Times Roman type on 12 point leading, in a text block of 6.5" by 9". At least one author, preferably the primary author, is required to attend the conference and present the work as a 20-minute talk. The talk should describe not only what is in your paper, but also subsequent and future work.

at freenix04chairs@usenix.org. All authors, but especially first-time authors, should feel free to email the program chairs with paper ideas. The
FREENIX Program Committee tries hard to find the good ideas in even the most
unpolished work, and is quite skilled at guiding inexperienced authors
toward a successful paper submission, acceptance, and presentation.
The USENIX Annual Technical Conference, like most conferences and journals, requires that papers not be submitted simultaneously to more than one conference or publication, that submitted papers not be previously published elsewhere, and that accepted papers not be subsequently published elsewhere for a year from the date of acceptance by USENIX. Papers submitted to this conference that are under review elsewhere will not be considered. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure-agreement forms cannot be accepted. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976.
Note regarding registration:
One author per paper may take a registration discount of $200. If the registration fee poses a hardship to the presenter, USENIX can offer a complimentary registration.
