VMware Vendor BoF: Machine Learning and Data Analysis at VMware
Xiaoyun Zhu, Staff Engineer; Anne Holler, Principal Engineer; Pradeep Padala, Staff Engineer; VMware
Thursday, June 20, 2014, 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., Columbus Ballroom A

Virtualization enables the elastic allocation of resources to workloads.  Right-sizing that resource allocation to maintain a guest performance Service Level Objective efficiently is what many cloud users want.  We'll present an overview of a VMware advanced development project that is exploring automatic horizontal and vertical scaling to maintain a guest SLO using heuristics and machine learning. We will also present about various data analysis projects in VMware focusing on problems including automated regex generation from unstructured logs, automatically generating min and max thresholds for timer series, capacity forecasting and root-cause analysis. A brief overview of the high-level problem and the research and product work being done to solve these problems will be provided.
