Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions

Note: This BoFs page is for attendees of both USENIX ATC '16 and SOUPS 2016.

Lead or attend a BoF! Meet with your peers! Present new work! Don't miss these special activities designed to maximize the value of your time at the conference. Birds-of-a-Feather sessions are very informal gatherings of persons interested in a particular topic.

Vendor BoFs

Want to demonstrate a new product or discuss your company's latest technologies with USENIX ATC '16 or SOUPS 2016 attendees? Host a Vendor BoF! These sponsored one-hour sessions give companies a chance to talk about products and proprietary technology—and they include promotional benefits. Email sponsorship@usenix.org if you're interested in sponsoring a Vendor BoF. Click here for more information about sponsorship opportunities.

Scheduling a BoF

To schedule a BoF, simply write the BoF title as well as your name and affiliation on the BoF board located in the registration area. If you have a description of your BoF you'd like posted on this Web page, please schedule your BoF on the BoF board, then send its title, the organizer's name and affiliation, and the date, time, and location of the BoF to bofs@usenix.org with "ATC '16 BoF" in the subject line.

BoF Descriptions

Developing a Framework to Automate Performance Benchmark Tasks
Yan Li, University of California, Santa Cruz
Wednesday, June 22, 8:00 pm–9:00 pm, Gold Coin Room

Carrying out even the simplest form of performance benchmark requires considerable knowledge of statistics and computer systems, and painstakingly following many error-prone steps. In fact, many performance measurements in peer-reviewed publications are flawed. Among many problems, they fall short in one or more of the following requirements: accuracy, precision, comparability, repeatability, and control of overhead. This is a serious problem because poor performance measurements mis-guide system design and optimization. We are designing a collection of algorithms and heuristics to automate the steps that are necessary to produce statistically sound performance measurement results. They cover the collection, storing, analysis, and comparing of performance measurements and can help to reduce human effort and error. We are implementing these methods and will release and manage it as a readily-usable open source software framework. Please come to the BoF session to gain early access to the code and talk about what kind of benchmark tasks you'd like to see automated.

Future Trends in Big-Data Analytics
Karthik Kambatla and Andrew Wang Cloudera Inc., Apache Hadoop
Wednesday, June 22, 8:00 pm–9:00 pm, Independence Room

Over the last decade, Apache Hadoop ecosystem has gone from conception to powering some of the largest clusters in the world. The next decade of development will be the most exciting yet, as Hadoop users demand ever larger data volumes, more complex data analytics, and increasingly diverse use cases.

During this BoF session, we'd like to discuss open problems and future directions in distributed data analytics, and hopefully foster avenues for continued industry/academia collaboration.

Building Secure Distributed Systems with Blockchains
Muneeb Ali, Blockstack Labs
Wednesday, June 22, 9:00 pm–10:00 pm, Gold Coin Room

Cryptocurrency blockchains, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, provide public infrastructure for bootstrapping trust in distributed systems without relying on any third party. Many systems can be built using blockchains, such as new, decentralized versions of DNS, PKI, and storage systems. Blockchains have gained a lot of interest from open-source developers and tech startups: over 1.1 Billion USD has been invested in blockchain startups. In this BoF session, we will discuss basics of blockchains, scalability properties of blockchain-based systems, and highlight key research challenges in blockchains that the USENIX systems/networking community can help with.
