User-mode Linux

User-mode Linux [2](UML) is the port of the Linux kernel to Linux. It implements a Linux virtual machine running on a Linux host. Its hardware is virtual, being constructed from resources provided by the host. UML can run essentially any application that can run on the host. The design and implementation of UML has been previously described[1]. This paper will describe the work that has taken place during the last year, including changes to what was described in the previous paper. This paper will also discuss new applications of UML involving integration of the virtual and host environments, along with other possibilties such as using UML as a clustering platform.
