An Invitation from the Program Chair

Dear Colleague,

Java™ has gone from a specialized language for web devices to being used in everything from embedded devices to the largest servers. Its ability to be hosted on such a wide range of platforms is the key to its extreme utility and portability.

Java has come a long way in its first nine years of life. The Second Java Virtual Machine Research and Technology Symposium will show you where Java VM stands today, and where it is heading tomorrow.

Featuring an excellent selection of technical presentations and papers from around the world, Java VM '02 dives under the covers of the latest academic and experimental virtual machines and garbage collectors. Among the hot topics:

  • Memory Management
  • Advanced VM Techniques
  • Just-in-Time Compilers
  • Real-Time VMs
  • Embedded VMs

The Keynote speech comes from Robert Berry, Distinguished Engineer, at The IBM Centre for Java Technology. He will discuss the forces shaping the Java revolution, and how Java will change because of those forces. An invited talk from David Tarditi, manager of the Advanced Compiler Technology at Microsoft Research, will describe the components of the .NET software initiative and the research opportunities and challenges presented by a multi-language VM.

If you want a place to talk technical and to network with other JVM implementers, join us in SF on August 1st and 2nd.

I look forward to seeing you there!
