No, we're not going to eat him! A roast is a meeting (usually held at a dinner honoring someone) where stories are told about the person being honored. Normally the stories are told by people who know the person being honored fairly well, and normally the stories are true, but may be slightly exaggerated. The stories will come from personal experience, or else contributed by someone who was really at the incident.
During the individual talks, the person being roasted normally is allowed to give short objections, feigns of surprise or groans of embarrassment.
After the roasters give their individual stories, the person being roasted has a chance to respond to all of them, with either clarifications or completely unrelated stories about the roasters (allowing them to "get even"). All is done in good sport, and (of course) nothing permanently damaging to the person's reputation would be considered. Sometimes the roasters start off with a few words demonstrating their admiration/love for the roastee, then proceed to skewer him.
