  1. The Deadline: Confirmation of our faxed printout of your electronic file must be received by 8 July 2003.

  2. The Format of the Printed Paper:
    • The text of the paper must be set in two columns.
    • The type must be Times or Times Roman, 10 point type on 12 point leading ("single spaced").
    • The type must fit inside an area 6.5 inches wide by 9 inches deep.
    • The notes must appear at the end of the paper, not at the foot of the page.
    • Do NOT include page numbers or running titles.

  3. The Electronic Files: The PostScript or PDF must have been generated with the instruction "Embed all fonts." HTML is very strongly desired in addition to the PS or PDF.

  4. We must receive your signed consent form(s) by 8 July 2003. All authors may sign a single form, or each author may send in a separate signed form, as convenient. You may mail your form to the USENIX office or fax it to 510.548.5738.

Electronic files (and physical copies, if required) are due on or before 8 July 2003. Copy received after this date will not be included in the printed proceedings.

PLEASE NOTE: Simply email the PDF or PostScript file of your paper, a tarball of your HTML, and your fax number to See below, Sending It in. We will print the paper in our office and fax you a copy for approval. Unless this method of submission proves impossible for you, there is no need to mail physical copies of your paper. Simply send the consent form and checklist by regular mail to the USENIX office.


The authors, not the USENIX staff, are solely responsible for the content and formatting of their paper. It is not possible to proofread or correct the papers before we print them. USENIX staff will be happy to advise about any aspect of paper presentation. Send email to the Production Director, Jane-Ellen Long, before the paper submission deadline.


Email two electronic versions of your paper on or before 8 July 2003, to These versions will be permanently mounted on the USENIX Web site. Please send:

  • One version, including any figures, as a PDF file with all fonts embedded. If you cannot provide PDF, please supply fully formatted PostScript.

  • A second version, in fully formatted HTML, with any illustrations in PNG, GIF, or JPEG format. A compressed format (e.g., uuencoded tar, gzip, zip) is preferred. Please be sure to include your .css file.

Note that some licensed material may not be publishable. USENIX does not have the resources to research licensed material and will rely on your determination. If there is any question on this matter, please contact your program chair immediately.

Attribution information (authors' affiliations and email addresses) should be included on the first page of the paper. Dedicated title pages should not be used. Keep the attribution short--no biographies or other extended information.

A 200-300 word abstract should follow the title and author names, before the main body of the paper.

Please include a section at the end of your paper providing availability information. If the system you describe is available to others, and if more information (reports, etc.) may be obtained, indicate terms and contact information.

Take care when making general references to people that the pronouns "she" and "he" are used fairly. If this is not done, the usage becomes offensive and distracting. It is also contrary to expected behavior, particularly in a professional forum.

Proofread your paper carefully yourself, run a spell-checker, and also have someone else proofread it. See above, Your Responsibilities.

USENIX tries to ensure a consistent style in our Proceedings. Layout sheets are not required, but authors are expected to adhere to the following format parameters. Deviations from this style must be cleared with the Production Director, Jane-Ellen Long, before submission. Please notify your Program Chair of any deviations as well.


  • Length: maximum 12 pages
  • No page numbers or running titles
  • 2 columns: each 3.125 inches (") wide
  • Gutter between columns: .25"
  • Left/right margin: 1"
  • Top margin: 1"
  • Bottom margin: 1"
  • Font: Times Roman strongly preferred
  • Title: 14 pt bold
  • Text: 10 pt type on 12 pt leading
  •   Attribution:
  •     Author's name: 12 pt roman
  •     Author's affiliation: 12 pt italic
  • Headings: 12 pt bold
  • Endnotes (not footnotes), equations, & illustration captions: no smaller than 8 point
  • Illustrations: black & white only

    Papers should be set in a readable serif font, preferably Times Roman. Again, please refrain from making a multitude of font changes. It makes the paper difficult to read.

    The body text should be 10 point type. Text should be printed single-spaced (12 pt leading for 10 pt text, 10 or 11 pt leading for 8 or 9 pt captions).

    Headings should be set in 12 point type, and endnotes, equations, and illustration captions set in 8 or 9 pt type. Type that is too small will not reproduce legibly.

    Copy should be submitted on 8.5 by 11 inch pages. All type, including illustrations, should be contained within a 6.5 by 9 inch rectangle centered on the physical page.

    Text should be set in two columns (3.125" each) in portrait orientation (long axis vertical). Illustrations and diagrams may be either portrait or landscape orientation.

    Please gather all notes and references at the end of your paper, i.e., do not typeset them as footnotes.

    Reproduction will be black on white only, on flat-surface paper. Keep this in mind when producing illustrations, particularly when using shaded areas--many shadings are hard to differentiate in offset-printed copies. We will not accept color prints or transparencies.

    Do not print running titles or page numbers on the papers.

    The paper should be a maximum of 12 pages long, including all references, diagrams, and appendices.

    Please send two copies of original, single-sided output, not xerographic copies of output. Number your pages lightly in pencil on the the reverse side of each page. Please package the submission in a way that will permit it to survive the journey.

    Final copy should be printed on a 600 dpi or better laser printer.


    With each paper, attach the completed checklist. Please sure to indicate who should be contacted if there is a problem with the format of the camera-ready copy.

    You may submit either an electronic file or physical copies.

    Electronic Submission

    Email a PDF, with all fonts embedded, or a PostScript file, to, with a fax number, so that you can approve the printed version of your paper. The files must be received by 8 July 2003.

    Physical Submission

    If you absolutely cannot submit electronically, mail two copies of the final paper to

    PRESENTATIONS   (back to top)

    Each paper will be scheduled in a 30-minute time period (no more than 25 minutes for your talk and at least 5 reserved for questions). We will monitor the time very closely and will not allow talks to run over their allotted time. Prepare your talks accordingly.

    Make your overheads or slides legible from a distance. Please read the USENIX slide presentation guidelines. A good rule of thumb with respect to font size is that if you're using slide preparation software, such as PowerPoint, you should not use sizes smaller than the application's defaults.

    We strongly suggest that you speak at the lectern and have an assistant handle your overhead slides (the session chair can help you find a slide turner if necessary). A laser-style pointer will be available at the lectern for your use. For 35mm slides, a remote control for the projector will be provided at the lectern.

    We will provide the following equipment:

    • 1 projector (either overhead or LCD--your choice)
    • 1 screen
    • 1 wired Lavalier microphone
    • cables and extension cords
