CAUTION: HIGH VOLTAGE, LOW SECURITY – A Familiar Tale of Cybersecurity Woes

Maggie Shipman, Southwest Research Institute

This presentation explores cybersecurity weaknesses in today’s EV charging ecosystem, centering on a protocol‑level ISO 15118 exploit against vehicle‑charger communication. We show how gaps in the design and deployment of this smart charging standard enable silent interception and manipulation of charging sessions. These issues illustrate that the ISO 15118 vulnerability reflects a broader pattern of low cybersecurity maturity in EV charging infrastructure deployment.
