What the uncertainty around federal grant funding means for USENIX
Amid the confusion around the future of federal funding in the United States, USENIX is among the many organizations preparing to navigate the uncertain future of scientific research in the US. While the payment freeze was lifted, ours are among thousands of federal grants being reviewed for compliance with recent executive orders, the outcome of which is uncertain.
USENIX conferences are where new technologies get introduced and unique partnerships are formed. We offer grants to students to allow them to attend, so they can make lasting connections, engage with research opportunities, and explore career paths. USENIX depends on funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a substantial portion of these student grants.
For 50 years, USENIX has been committed to our values through times of uncertainty, regardless of the cost. We want to assure our community that we remain committed to providing grants, starting with students attending the 23rd USENIX Conference on File and Storage Technologies (FAST '25) later this month.
As a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit, USENIX is reliant on these federal funds to support our student grants. Please consider a donation to help us keep our student grant programs strong. No matter what amount you choose to give, you’ll be helping to secure the future of advanced computing systems, ensuring that emerging generations can participate in essential research collaboration.
