White House Updates Open Access Policy

Yesterday I saw a tongue-in-cheek petition asking for the White House to intervene in a debate over a proposed new University of Kansas men's basketball team uniform. The petition called the uniforms “stylistically heinous” and said they “tarnish a venerated institution.” The petition asked the White House to “Stand up for our university, for coherent color schemes, and for the spirit of Wilt Chamberlain.”

See Us at SCALE11x (and other updates)

Are you attending SCALE11x in Los Angeles this weekend? I look forward to SCALE every year and was excited to have a USENIX booth in the expo again. I think my first SCALE was five years ago when I was working at Linux Pro Magazine, and I immediately fell in love with the great community event and made a ton of friends while I was there. This year, Mother Nature called and dumped a foot of snow on lovely, Lawrence, Kansas.

USENIX Members Support Open Access

Open access to scholarly papers continues to be a hot topic, as it should be. Back in April, I wrote about the USENIX open access policy. Since 2008, USENIX papers have been freely available and USENIX authors retain their copyright.

USENIX Community and Events Update: January 18, 2013

What's going on with the USENIX community? Robin "Roblimo" Miller asked me that question over G+ last week. See the video online at Slashdot:

Reminder: Upcoming CFP Deadlines

Did you make a list of New Year's Resolutions that included things such as:

  • Don't miss deadlines
  • Attend more conferences
  • Do a better job of promoting my work
  • Get over my imposter syndrome
  • Eat more vegetables

If so, you'll want to note our upcoming calls for papers deadlines while you nibble on carrot sticks and plan your paper:

Papers and Reports: Community and Teaching

The second Papers and Reports session on Thursday morning, chaired by Andrew Hume, focused on education and training. The first to present was Rudy Gevaert from Ghent University. In his talk, entitled "A sustainable model for ICT capacity building in developing countries", Rudy discussed lessons learned over nearly a decade of bringing information and communication technology (ICT) skills and resources to developing nations. The Flemish Inter-University Council for University Development Cooperation (VLIR-UOS) has been working partner universities in Cuba and Ethiopia.
