USENIX Association Conference Network

Wiki
The following conferences have a wiki:

USENIX '05 wiki

OSDI'04/WORLDS'04: wiki

LISA'04: wiki

NTP
The gateway offers Network Time Protocol service. Direct your ntp client at 131.106.56.1 for updates to local conference time.

Terminal Room
Our larger conferences (Security, LISA, and ATC) usually have a Terminal Room which provides a few *NIX boxes for those without laptops. Those with laptops and drained batteries will appreciate the tables with ethernet connections and power. Occasionally Real Work gets done in the Terminal Room.

Printing
There is usually an HP LaserJet printer in the Terminal Room. It can be reached at 131.106.56.9 or by direct parallel port connection. Be sure to note the closing hours of the Terminal Room and print your boarding passes early.

Web Proxy
The gateway is also a transparent web and ftp proxy.

Conference LAN

Usage
The USENIX confernece network is provided to facilitate the free exchange of ideas with other attendees and colleagues unable to attend. It is expected that attendees will respect each other's ability to do so and not intentionally disrupt the network. Further:

The wired and wireless networks provided by USENIX at this conference are for the use of conference attendees only, subject to the following conditions:
  • USENIX may monitor these networks
  • Any illicit or intrusive use of the network, including packet sniffing, is expressly forbidden
  • The wireless network is open and insecure. USENIX strongly recommends that all users encrypt their transmissions. Users are solely responsible for the security of their passwords and data.

Security
The Conference Network is not secure. Use of encryption is highly recommended.

Filtering Policy
The Conference Network employs minimal filtering to ensure that the broadest range of applications have their requisite ports available. Packets from non-routable networks are denied egress and ingress as are packets with originating IPs on our inside network arriving on our external network interface.

NAT
Presently Network Address Translation is used to provide access to more users than we have static routable IPs. If we have an excess of static routable IPs available we can allocate them to users on the internal network for good cause, e.g. a vpn client that does not work through NAT.

Static IPs
Upon request Static IP assignments are available. Static IPs are not routed differently than those assigned by DHCP.

Traffic Prioritization
At times the Conference Network will become oversubscribed. At those time traffic with desination ports or protocols commonly associated with encrypted traffic is prioritized. DNS queries are also given priority and dedicated bandwidth. Use of high bandwidth applications during peak usage times is discouraged but not usually regulated. Attendees using high bandwidth applications may find their bandwidth limited.
