Junior System Administrator, Level 2 or Higher
Do you want to be the go-to person for the technical needs of an entire organization—albeit a small one?
Does the idea of traveling to a hotel, setting up a wireless network for 1000 tech-savvy people, and then tearing it down a week later excite you?
Would you be happy knowing that we only use Windows to run UPS shipping software while all of our other infrastructure is strictly Mac and Linux?
If so, we have an excellent opportunity for you to learn and grow as part of a close-knit, focused team.
USENIX is a small non-profit organization supporting a large, highly technical community, whose mission is to foster technical excellence and innovation. We're seeking a new member of our team to fill a vital role in tech support as we transition away from a traditional local machine room to a flexible, contemporary office where the majority of our services run in the cloud.
Your duties will include:
- Providing system and network administration and on-call support for our wired/wireless LAN, in-house firewall, and Linux and Mac file servers
- Configuring, maintaining, and repairing Mac systems for 10+ users
- Serving as the one-person help desk for 10 staff members using Macs, both local and remote, including providing user training in applications and operating system fundamentals
- Writing and maintaining documentation for office technical procedures
- Becoming one of the primary administrators for our Salesforce instance and our Google accounts
- Assisting in the transition of in-house services (including mail and DNS) to outside vendors
- Setting up, configuring, and supporting wireless networks at conferences
You should have:
- One to three years of experience in a system administration position
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong skills with Linux and Mac commands/utilities
- Proficiency with basic Linux and Mac system administration tools and processes, e.g., user administration, system backup and recovery, networking, file servers, and printers; familiarity with the LAMP stack
- Experience automating repetitive tasks using a common scripting language such as shell, perl, python, etc.
The ideal candidate thrives in a team-oriented environment, would enjoy traveling to conferences to provide on-site networking and technical support, is quick to investigate and understand new technologies, is flexible, and wants to be part of and support an elite technical community.
You will be the sole permanent sysadmin in our office, which is also supported by local and remote senior sysadmin consultants, who will be available to work with you to manage the systems and provide mentorship.
This is a full-time, exempt position located in Berkeley, CA. Some travel will be required.
To apply, send email to sysadminjob@usenix.org.
