Abstract:

WilTel currently uses Unix workstations to run Cabletron's Spectrum network monitoring tool. This tool is used to monitor external customer networks as well as the internal network.

On the voice side of the house, there is a pc-based monitoring system. These PCs gather alarm information from switches and pass it on to a Unix workstation for alarm disposition.

There is a project in-house to consolidate the voice and data sides into one management system. As the possibilities are investigated, Windows NT is beginning to figure into the equation.

For the purpose of this consolidation project, NT is being researched for benefits it can offer as well as utilizing the power of each operating systems to their fullest extent.
