Abstract:
At the University of South Florida we have experienced a migration to NT to act as servers for academic departmental LANs, open access labs, and as servers for administrative offices. In these settings NT has been used to provide the traditional services of file sharing and print serving. In recent months we have begun to notice the emergence of NT in research labs with inquiries for support of programming efforts into various research areas. With this emergence in of NT in various research efforts we have begun to look at NT as a possible platform for implementations of projects within our own research interests so that we may be able to provide better informed support to these new groups.
In our group we are primarily involved in network based projects. We are currently working with NT in the Gigabit Ethernet area and very active in the development of high speed network performance monitoring tools. We have been and continue to work on streaming real-time and canned video, audio, and non-periodic media via IP multicast. As an Internet 2 University we have become interested in the Quality of Service issues which are fundamental to this initiative and plan to contribute to this effort.
