Abstract:

I am part of a group that is developing the software which will allow the Teradata database to operate on a parallel system in which each node is running the Windows NT operating system.

The project is not an attempt to run the Teradata database on an NT cluster. Nor is it an attempt to create a distributed database. We are adding the necessary capabilities to Windows NT which will allow us to create a "system" out of a collection of nodes. This system will be linked by NCR's proprietary interconnect technology, the Bynet.

The goal is to not modify the database code, or as little as possible, but to provide an interface layer between the database and the operating system. NCR currently offers such a layer under UNIX. It is called the Parallel Database Extension (PDE).

Due to the high level of interaction between data structures and the necessity of locking, our interface layer will consist of both user and kernel mode code.
