TDS Computing Services supports the TDS family of companies. The sister companies include United States Cellular (USCC), American Paging Inc. (API), TDS Telecom, Aerial Communications Inc. (ACI), Suttle Press and Integrated Communication Consultants.

Each of our supported companies is currently using or investigating a transition to Windows NT. TDS Telecom, our forerunner in Windows NT, has converted over 100 local telephone companies across the United States as well as their corporate office located in Madison, Wisconsin from Novell Netware to Windows NT 3.51. We are currently stabilizing, expanding and upgrading their domain. Our second largest installation was for API, installing over 200 NT workstations and mirrored servers (using Octopus software) in their Call Center.

Our research includes an intense look at Windows NT 4.0, its advantages and disadvantages. We are also performance tuning the servers and workstations in our domains. With rollout coming quickly to other business units, we hope to learn from our architectures and build better domains for our other companies.

Specifically we are investigating the differences between WINS and DNS and hope to formulate a company-wide standard for name resolution. We are also planning numerous database conversions from UNIX and Mainframe based systems (ORACLE) to SQL Server. Remote access is also a hot issue with all of our companies. We have been investigating a variety of solutions including RAS, WinFrame and router based configurations. Other hot topics being researched include Internet and Intranet solutions and enhancements as well as server clustering for disaster recovery.
