Abstract:

The Center for Information Technology Integration is engaged in projects and areas central to the University's near- and intermediate-term information technology needs, including computer security, mobile computing, high-speed networking, intrusion detection, smartcards, and network video. In the security and smartcard area, CITI has developed a smartcard-based implementation of the Shoup-Rubin protocol for secure session-key establishment, and has successfully demonstrated smartcard-based, provably secure videoconferencing that uses this prototype implementation. CITI is currently implementing IP on the Schlumberger Cyberflex card. In the intrusion detection arena, CITI is building a packet vault for secure storage of network traffic for later analysis. (More information at www.citi.umich.edu.)

While UNIX has been our traditional development platform, we have been gaining experience with Windows NT at CITI. On projects such as the Kerberos Local Plugin, which permits Kerberos authenticated and secure communications between a Web server and client, we have found the Windows NT development environment to be well-suited to our work. In our secure video project, we have been forced to use Windows 95 until Windows NT "catches up" in terms of driver support. In other areas, such as the packet vault, we would like to use Windows NT because of its real-time capabilities. We realize we need to learn more about Windows NT internals, performance tools and techniques, real-time capabilities, and driver migration. I am looking forward to accomplishing these goals at the workshop, and to share our experiences and frustrations.
