BoF Descriptions

SMALL Installation Systems Administration
Christopher DeMarco, MAYA Design
Monday, December 5, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Constitution A

Implementation and practice are totally different at a small organization.

OpenAFS Community
Brian Sebby, Argonne National Laboratory
Monday, December 5, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Constitution B

AFS is a distributed file system that is available on a broad range of platforms and provides global access to a unified namespace providing location independence, scalability, security, and transparent migration capabilities. OpenAFS is the open source, community maintained branch of the AFS software originally developed by IBM/Transarc. While OpenAFS now has its own conference, this BoF is intended for AFS administrators at LISA to meet and discuss any issues they may be having, and for people interested in AFS to find out more information.

Software Patents and Linux
Deb Nicholson, Open Invention Network
Monday, December 5, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Gardner

If you're a Linux developer or you work with Linux developers, it's important to understand the situation with software patents. Learn more about the current landscape and what you may be able to do about it.

Information Management for Sites: How Do We Organize?
Monday, December 5, 8:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., Constitution A

Config Management=Desired. CMDB=Actual?
Christopher Hoey, Wireless Generation
Monday, December 5, 9:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., Constitution A

You define the desired state of your system in your configuration management tool. You want a CMDB because that is all the rage these days. Is your configuration management tool a CMDB? Come share your CMDB hacks/projects/works and see a quick overview of a CouchDB based CMDB we built in house to compare the actual state of our systems to the desired state of the system. We would like to give this work to the community but come give us feedback if the idea is even sane to begin with. =)

Opscode Vendor BoF
Tuesday, December 6, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Fairfax A

devops BoF
Kris Buytaert
Tuesday, December 6, 7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., Gardner

Some call this phenomenon devops, others agile system administration. Truth is that agile techniques used in development have an impact on the way operations organizes its work. Similarly, operations and sysadmins are becoming programmers because of the virtualization and automation trend, where everything is managed through an API. devops is a new movement—it's the way lots of sysadmin people have been working, do work, or should work. So if you are a developer with a interest in system administration, or a sysadmin interested in development, join us in the discussion.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Friends BoF
Tuesday, December 6, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Hampton

Oracle Vendor BoF: Oracle Vendor BoF: Zero Downtime Updates for Oracle Linux with Ksplice
Tuesday, December 6, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Republic A

On July 21, 2011, Oracle announced that it has acquired Ksplice, a privately-held company based in Cambridge, MA. Ksplice is the creator of innovative zero downtime update technology for Linux. The addition of Ksplice's technology will increase the security, reliability and availability of Oracle Linux by enabling customers to apply security updates, diagnostics patches and critical bug fixes without rebooting. As of September 1st, 2011, this technology is available for Oracle Linux Premier Support customers. In this session you will hear about:

  • The benefits of Ksplice patching in customer's Linux environment
  • How Ksplice technology will help save money by avoiding downtime and remain compliant with security vulnerability and critical patch updates
  • The impact in a multi-tier application environment when applying patches

(This is a repeat of his opening keynote at the Pittsburgh Perl Workshop.)

Getting Started with Configuration Management
Cory Lueninghoener, Los Alamos National Laboratory
Tuesday, December 6, 9:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., Republic B

Are all of your friends talking about configuration management, but you don't know where to start? Do you have a friend who needs to jump on the bandwagon but just hasn't been able to? Did you make mistakes during your deployment that you don't want others to make again? Come talk about what's keeping you back, what has helped get you going, what tools have worked well for you, and anything else that can help the process. Make this year the year that you finally get your configurations managed. Experienced and inexperienced configuration managers welcome.

Extopus and RemOcular: Tobi Oetiker's New OSS Monitoring Tools
Tobi Oetiker, OETIKER+PARTNER AG
Tuesday, December 6, 9:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., Berkeley

In this BoF I will present two new OSS tools I have been working on in 2011:
Extopus: A Web 2.0 front end to existing monitoring systems. Extopus can integrate millions of nodes from multiple monitoring servers into a single front end. Visualization plugins provide custom presentation for each node type. The ability to integrate all nodes into a single tree structure, as well as full search capabilities, make this tool especially powerful. http://www.extopus.org
RemOcular: An attractive Web 2.0 front end to UNIX command-line information-gathering tools (top, traceroute, df, nmap, etc.). RemOcular makes it extremely simple to cater to environments where shell access is not possible or not desirable. http://www.remocular.org
Both tools are plugin-based—the ideal hacking target for all you new devops.

Oracle Solaris 11—Cloud Management Vendor BoF
Bart Smaalders, Principal Software Engineer, Oracle; Dave Miner, Principal Software Engineer, Oracle
Wednesday, December 7, 9:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Back Bay A

This session covers How Oracle Solaris 11 redefines life cycle management in both a cloud environment as well as in a traditional data center environment. With Oracle Solaris 11 we are introducing the concept of boot environments which allow you to safely update Oracle Solaris in a fraction of the time it takes for other OS'es by leveraging the power of ZFS. You can safely roll-back to your previous environment. By stream-lining the reboot process Oracle Solaris 11 allows you to do that 2-3 times faster than other OS'es. Together with the new Image Packaging System and the Automated Installer, Oracle Solaris 11 provides you with the agility and simplicity you need to manage a large-scale infrastructure safely.
